Crystal Marsh was appointed as assistant principal of Edison Intermediate School by the Westfield Board of Education at its public meeting on June 13.
Effective July 17, Marsh will fill the position held by Mary Asfendis, who recently was appointed principal of Roosevelt Intermediate School following the retirement of Stewart Carey.
Currently Marsh is a science teacher and grade team leader in the Salk School of Science Middle School in New York City. Marsh has worked for more than five years with staff developers from the Teachers College at Columbia University Reading and Writing Project to use the Common Core State Standards to help integrate science and humanities. She brings more than a decade of experience in the classroom, including as lead teacher at the Urban Advantage Middle School Science Initiative.
A graduate of Columbia University, Teachers College, where she received a Master of Education degree, Marsh also earned a Master of Science degree in Adolescent Education from Pace University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Biological Basis of Behavior.
She is a National Board Certified Teacher in Science -Early Adolescence and is a member of the National Science Teachers Association. She has been named a Master Teacher of Science by Math for America and has been a science consultant for the Sesame Workshop.
“I believe that Crystal Marsh will be a perfect fit for Westfield where we will welcome her expertise in instruction, assessment, curriculum development and relationship building,” stated Superintendent of Schools, Margaret Dolan.

As assistant principal, I will work hard to uphold the tradition of excellence of the Westfield Public Schools.”
The interview committee for the Edison Intermediate School assistant principal’s position included Edison Intermediate School principal, Matt Bolton; human resources specialist, Barbara Ball; district supervisor of Special Education Preschool through 12th grade, Andrea Lo; and Edison Intermediate School staff members Andrew Cusumano and Kerri Webster.
