You’re young, and you enjoy partying, but your gym routine starts in the early morning. You just can’t manage to stay up late.
Maybe you’re further along and really enjoy your eight hours of sleep. Partying until 2 a.m. just doesn’t work.
So, how can early risers celebrate New Year’s Eve?
I fit into both categories above, but I like to celebrate. If you can’t bring yourself to party past midnight, why not bring New Year’s Eve earlier into the evening?
The UK is five hours ahead of Eastern Time. 9 a.m. in New York is 2 p.m. in London. This can work in your favor.
Invite your fellow early-rising friends over for drinks (or dinner) at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. On your smartphone or iPad, access the radio app. Find BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4 or BBC5. (Personally I like BBC4.)
It’s 11 p.m. in London. Their correspondents will be in Trafalgar Square (London’s version of Times Square) doing the run-up to dropping the ball. Shortly before 7 p.m. ET they do the countdown. Meanwhile, you have distributed party hats and noisemakers. You’ve celebrated New Year’s Eve at 7 p.m. Now it’s time for dinner.
But what if you live in San Francisco? That extra three-hour time difference means you would be celebrating midnight in London at 4 p.m. on the West Coast. That won’t work. This brings up another problem: Many serious adults aren’t that good with noisemakers and party hats, yelling “Happy New Year!” It takes some loosening up beforehand.
When we lived in San Francisco, we invited friends over for dinner on New Year’s Eve. At 9 p.m., we stopped what we were doing and celebrated New Year’s on New York time. The gang was lukewarm. Later in the meal, at 10 p.m., we stopped again, celebrating New Year’s on Chicago time. Dessert and New Year’s in Denver arrived at 11 p.m. After three rounds of practice, the crowd was getting into it. At midnight San Francisco time, everyone was into it!
