True to the Game,” the film adaptation of the book by New York Times’ best-selling author Teri Woods, hit theaters over the weekend and came in as the #1 independent film at the box office. The opening weekend earned $472k at the box office, with only 419 screens, earning back half the film’s budget in one weekend. Most importantly it ranked #17 in the top 20 movies of the weekend and 8th in the top 10 of per screen average earnings. It beat out other independent films with backing from major production companies.

“True to the Game” is a drama that follows the love story between a prominent, Philadelphia drug dealer, Quadir Richards (Columbus Short) and around the way girl, Gena Rollins (Erica Peeples). Quadir has trouble balancing his street life and his newfound love, while Gena finally gives in to Quadir despite her initial reservations. The film also stars Vivica A. Fox, Draya Michele, Andra Fuller and the late Nelsan Ellis. Directed by Preston A. Whitmore II and produced by Manny Halley of Imani Motion Picture. “True to the Game” is both self-financed and self-distributed.
